ウィリアム父さん -- ルイス・キャロル

「今日の詩」の選者が送ってきたのはルイス・キャロルの「不思議の国のアリス」にあるという韻文 “Father William” 「ウィリアム父さん」である。私はとうとうアリスを読み損ねたし、ディズニーの映画も見ていない。たとえ読んだとしても、以下の英文を完全には訳せなかったろう。

一番気になるのは “Yet you balanced an eel on the end of your nose -” である。あらゆる辞書を調べても良く分からなかった。鰻のバランスを取るというと、ヌルヌルした魚を掴み、さばくことを日本人は考えてしまう。そんな器用な技は西洋の料理では必要なのか？鰻はハサミで切って、なべに放り込めばいいはずである。

"You are old, Father William," the young man said,
"And your hair has become very white;
And yet you incessantly stand on your head -
Do you think, at your age, it is right?"

"In my youth," Father William replied to his son,
"I feared it might injure the brain;
But now that I'm perfectly sure I have none,
Why, I do it again and again."

"You are old," said the youth, "as I mentioned before,
And have grown most uncommonly fat;
Yet you turned a back somersault in at the door -
Pray, what is the reason of that?"

"In my youth," said the sage, as he shook his gray locks,
"I kept all my limbs very supple
By the use of this ointment - one shilling the box -
Allow me to sell you a couple."

"You are old," said the youth, "and your jaws are too weak
For anything tougher than suet;
Yet you finished the goose, with the bones and the beak -
Pray, how did you manage to do it?"

"In my youth," said his father, "I took to the law,
And argued each case with my wife;
And the muscular strength which it gave to my jaw
Has lasted the rest of my life."

"You are old," said the youth; "one would hardly suppose
That your eye was as steady as ever;
Yet you balanced an eel on the end of your nose -
What made you so awfully clever?"

"I have answered three questions, and that is enough,"
Said his father; "don't give yourself airs!

「ウィリアム父さん、年を取っているのに」と息子は言う。
「髪の毛は白くなっているのに
いつも逆立ちをしている―
年を考えてよ、良くないよ！」

ウィリアム父さんは「若い頃は」と息子に言う。
「頭が悪くなりはせんかと思ったが
今でも何ともないだろう
なあに、これからも続けるさ」。

「年を取っているのに」と息子は言う。「何度も言うけど
父さんはすごく太ったよ。
でもドアでとんぼ返りをするのだから―
ねえどうしてなの？」

「若い頃は」と髪を振って彼は言った。
「わしの手足は柔らかかった
この軟膏のおかげでな ― 一箱一シリング ―
お前に売ってやろうか？」

「年を取ったから」と息子は言う。「顎は弱くなり
脂身より硬いものは噛めないはず。
でも骨も嘴もついたガチョウも平らげる―
どうしたら、そんなことができるの？」

「若い頃は」と彼は言った。「法律に夢中になり
かみさんと一々議論したのさ。
そのおかげで顎の筋肉が鍛えられ
一生丈夫てわけだ」

「年を取っているのに」と息子は言う。「考えられないよ
今でも視力はしっかりしている。
チラッと見ただけで鰻の重さが分かる―
どうしてそんなに器用なの？

「わしは三つ答えたよ、もう充分だろう」
と父さんは言う。「もう止めろよ！
こんな話一日中聞けると思うのかね？
止めないと階段から突き落とすぞ」。
