呪われた宮殿 -- エドガー・アラン・ポー

「今日の詩」の選者が送ってきたのはエドガー・アラン・ポーの “The Haunted Palace” 「呪われた宮殿」である。私はポーについてまだほとんど知らないが、大変技巧を凝らした詩人である。

今日の詩も強弱核を狙い、薄気味悪い詩に迫力を与え、一詩節８行は[a, b, a, b, c, d, c, d]の脚韻になっている。

The Haunted Palace

In the greenest of our valleys
By good angels tenanted,
Once a fair and stately palace -
Radiant palace - reared its head.
In the monarch Thought's dominion -
It stood there!
Never seraph spread a pinion
Over fabric half so fair!

Banners yellow, glorious, golden,
On its roof did float and flow,
(This - all this - was in the olden
Time long ago,)
And every gentle air that dallied,
In that sweet day,
Along the ramparts plumed and pallid,
A winged odor went away.

Wanderers in that happy valley,
Through two luminous windows, saw
Spirits moving musically,
To a lute's well-tuned law,
Round about a throne where, sitting
(Porphyrogene!)
In state his glory well-befitting,
The ruler of the realm was seen.

And all with pearl and ruby glowing
Was the fair palace door,
Through which came flowing, flowing, flowing,
And sparkling evermore,
A troop of Echoes, whose sweet duty
Was but to sing,
In voices of surpassing beauty,
The wit and wisdom of their king.

But evil things, in robes of sorrow,
Assailed the monarch's high estate.
(Ah, let us mourn! - for never morrow
Shall dawn upon him desolate!)
And round about his home the glory
That blushed and bloomed,
Is but a dim-remembered story
Of the old time entombed.

And travellers, now, within that valley,
Through the red-litten windows see
Vast forms, that move fantastically
To a discordant melody,
While, like a ghastly rapid river,
Through the pale door
A hideous throng rush out forever
And laugh - but smile no more.

呪われた宮殿

今では善天使が住む
目の覚める緑の谷に
壮麗な宮殿があった ―
輝く宮殿が ― 姿を現わした。
思考の君主が支配する領地に ―
宮殿は立っていた！
熾天使も翼広げぬ
華麗な建物の上！

燦然と輝く黄金の旗は
屋根に漂い、靡き

昔の話だった）
快適な日に戯れる
優しき大気は
淡く昇る城壁に沿い
貴い香が流れて行った。

幸福の谷を旅する人々は
二つの明るく輝く窓から
霊がリュートの音律にのり
軽やかに動く回る
玉座の回り、座するは

栄光に相応しき容姿。

輝く真珠とルビーの
華麗な城門より
流れ、流れ、流れ
きらめきたるこだま
芳しき勤めはただ
並外れた美声で
王者の知恵を
賛美するのみ。

悲しいかな！禍が
王者の富を害った。

夜明けはなく！）
バラ色に咲ける
栄光に残るは
埋められたる
暗き想い出。

谷に入りたる旅人は見ん。
赤い灯火の窓より
不協和の旋律に合わせ
異様に動く人影

「アッシャー家の崩壊」も題名だけで読んでいません。長い人生何をしていたのでしょう？意地を張らないで翻訳で読んでしまおうかな。

今日の purple と porphyrios の話でポーの詩のここを思い出しました。
(Porphyrogene!)
のところは、porphyra (purple)と genos (birth)というギリシャ語なんですね。

genos は誕生ですか。家系とかの造語要素になっていますね。母親とも関係しているのでしょうか。スターバット・マーテルにも genetrix とかいう言葉が出てきましたね。紫貝から生まれたのですか。凄い名前です。
