秋浦歌

白髪三千丈
縁愁似個長
不知明鏡裏
何処得秋霜

愁に縁りて個の似く長し
知らず　明鏡の裏
何れの処にか秋霜を得たる

My white hair is to reach aground！
With anxiety my hair may overgrow.

I know this Chinese poeme. At school, I have learned Li Po's poems. I think that Li Po's poems are beautiful. But at school, for me, one of the most difficult things was to read 漢字. I was not at 漢字. I was better at Hangul and English..^_^ For exemple, in Korea, '白' is read into 'Baek'. Now I study again 漢字, because I am studying Japanese.

Some years ago, I never imagined that I would study again 漢字! At that time, I thought that for Asian language, Korean was enough and that only european languagese like English, French, German, Spanish and Italian were necessary . But now, I don't think so. As you told me, 漢字 is necessary in order to understand Asian old literature including Korean old literature. In fact, even now I don't feel familiar with East Asian literature, because I don't know well 漢字, I think.

For a long time, my world has been "Europe" and "North America". But I want to understand East Asian culture, too, because anyway, I am East asian.

My grandfather was a great 漢字 reader. He could read Chinese classic written by calligraphers. But my reading and writing 漢字 are very poor. I agree with you. We are Asian. A friend of mine continues to learn Chinese as his second foreign language. He was an earnest student. But Chinese-majored student was blacklisted. 公安?(euphemism for secret police) dogged him, who might be an admirer of 毛沢東.

I want to study Chinese classic with him. His earnest study was not rewarded, because of the Bamboo Curtain. He only visited Taiwan and Hongkong with colleagues. Now he is free as a pensioner. I want to follow him.
