Rien qu’un chœur des Cicadas

Matsuo Basho

This Phamplet written in French, composed of 44 pages is very helpful for me who am starting to be interested in and want to understand Japanese art(painting, Classic music players), Japanese literature and Japanese design.

You refer to 与謝蕪村, whose 俳句 is one of the main staple of Japanese reading. I think that there was no cultural communication between Japan and Korean. But you can find some Korean people who admired Chinese culture but tried to creat the genuine Korean art.

Thank you for your comment. Yes, unfortunately, there was no cultural communication between Japan and Korean. For exemple, South Koreans of my generation does not know well Japanese culture(especially Literature), but they are more familiar with American, French, German, Italian cultures. Because at school, we did not learn Japanese literature, Japanese art..

If I ask South Korans of my generation or teenagers what they know in Japanese culture, many South Korean young people refer to Kimono, Sushi, some contemporain Japanese novels written by Japanese young writers, Animation or Manga, Onsen, Tatami, Odaiba, Ginza of Tokyo, Some tourist places, some Japanese young TV or movie stars, Mikimoto, Shisheido, Honda, Toyota, Sony etc.

But I think that Haiku, Waka, Japanese classic literature, Japanese plays, Japanese History(Edo, Meiji, Nara periods..), Japanese tradition are not well known among young South Koreans.

与謝蕪村 was not a goverment official but similar to Chinese Mandarins who passed the civil servant examinaton 科挙登用試験, notorious for its high barrier. He was a painter as well as a poet. I cannot agrreed with "Only cultured men is qualified to be artist"

Especially, South Korean teenagers are interested only in Japanese Animation, Manga, Japanese Idol Stars in Japanese culture, I think.

Personally, I am interested in Japanese novels, poems, art(painting, Classic music players, Kimono's flower design, Templess architectural design, 'Art de vivre', Japanese healty traditional food in Japanese culture.

I remember a comment by a French philosopher in the 18th century. He told that the Chinese system was better than French system. In France, only men with patrician backgroud , if not able, were qualified to be civil servants. He did not know the actuality of China. But I guess the reason why the entrance examination for ecole polytechnique is so tough. The philosopher was so influencial.

Thank you for your useful information on 与謝蕪村(Yosa Buson). I heard for the first time anout Yosa Buson in this pamphlet written in French. Owing to this pamphlet. I could know the existance of Yosa Buson and of le Maître Dôgen, History of Kimono, History of "L'armure japonaise". In South Korea, I have not yet found the books on these informations.

Of course Japanese Mangas are not produced for Korean youth. Japanese youth favoured. Middle-aged white collars are reading Mangas in their commuter train.

Yes, I heard that the Chinese system was better than French system. I feel sorry for collapse of Chinese culture and Chinese system, because of failure of modernization, cultural revolution, dictatorial communism. Korea was much influenced by China in culture and system, but today for many South Koreans, China is just a poor and non-developped country.

So many young South Koreans neglect Chinese culture, because they think that there is not any more things to lear from China. Now many South Koreans would like to follow American or european cultures and systems, I think.

I think that Camille Claudel's brother, Paul Claudel and Andr?? Malraux were French version of Chinese mandarins. Both cultured, but are thay able officials? Paul Claudel was ambasador to Japan. But Such personell is very French. I an afraid that such a policy would disappear. Who can judge both personels are correct?

May I ask you what means exactly that Paul Claudel and André Malraux were French version of Chinese mandarins?^^ Personally, I am familiar well with working with very French personal's people. And I am not reluctant to be adapted to French way.^^

I have just thought of similarity between French government officials and Chinese mandarins. Paul Claudel is a graduate from Paris Institute of Political Studies. He is an elite in terms of intelligence. He is a civil servant and that distinguished in literature. We cannot expect such a case in Japan. If he wants to start his favorite career, he must be forced to resign as an official.

The goverment officials would be conscious of popular opimions surveyed in terms of "supporting rate of the cabinet". They would be increasingly busy and no time to spend time for "non-political" isues. They cannot write or paint. In Japan, we hear some say "Our government officials are close to the French counterparts. We should change our system".

I have been confident erroneously that Andr?? Malraux graduated from an elitist educational institute. when young, he was in French-ruled Indochina. I was fascinated with his work including "The Royal Road". After the War, he was appointed as Minister of Education by De Gaulle.

One of my favorite French novels is <L'élégance du hérisson> written by Murielle Barbery. This French novel which received le PRIX DES LIBRARIRIES 2007 is a best-seller in France and in South Korea. Fan of Japanese culture, Murielle Barbery describes the beauty of Japanese culture in this novel. In this novel, there is also a poem of Basho. I present you this "extrait" on Basho's poem.
