「今日の詩」はウォルター・ホイットマンの「春に歌いながら These I singing in spring 」である。例によって単語を次々に並べて連続的に描写する。今日はピリオドが最後に一つあるだけである。まさに息をつく暇もない。大変な肺活量の持ち主であるが、私の訳はこれに追随できない。 今日は散策に出かけ群生する草花に圧倒される詩である。話者に纏わる草花はいつしか友人の霊になり、彼に群がる。話者が感傷的な幻想に引き込まれたのか。ホイットマンはオカルトには関心がないはず。彼が描写すると、話者は派手な幻想を意識的に創り出し、満喫した感じになる。きわめて色彩的である。 These I singing in spring These I singing in spring collect for lovers, (For who but I should understand lovers and all their sorrow and joy? Today, owing to you, I can learn a new poet "Walter Whitman". Thank you. His poem <These I singing in spring> is a liitle long and has a special form, I think. Because in this poem, many words repeat. Anyway, this poem is for this season. :)

Walter Whitman is an American poet, active in the Civil War era. He is very American. He hated traditional poetical style. As you see, his poem is rhyme-free. His English is very colloquial.

He was an admirer of Abraham Lincoln. He wrote an elegy for the assassined President, entitled <O Captain>. He is now a cultural hero in America. Boys and girls in the U.S. recite his poems.

I do not know why he insert <singing in spring >. I guess that there was a popular song <singing in spring >. or he thought<singing in spring >is beautiful line. Three word are closely rhymed.

Oh, thank you very much for your detailed explanation on this poem and the poet. When I read for the first time this poem on your blog, I thought that it was very special form. Now I understand. This poem is rhyme-free! Yes, singing in spring is a beautiful line with a melody(-ing).

Sing-ing may sound nice to Anglophone people. Then ringing, swinging may be their favorite.

I like the pronounciation -ing, even if I am not English native speaker. The melody is good. :)
