断章四：熱帯の大樹によくある ― サムエル・テイラー・コールリッジ

1897年の二月にコールリッジがノートに記した詩とされる。この不思議な樹はバンヤンだそうである （The Collected Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Volume 16：Part 1）。バンヤンはすでに東洋から西洋に運び込まれ、コールリッジが見る機会はあったであろう。その樹の下で苦行僧が祈祷する光景は目にしていないはずである。これはロマン派一流の幻想の産物であろう。上述文献の論者はさらに論者は、作者はバンヤンの分かれた幹で多神教を喩えているとする。なるほど。

未発表の詩であるが、この段階での韻の構造は英雄韻である。

As some vast Tropic tree, itself a wood,
That crests its Head with clouds, beneath the flood
Feeds its deep roots, and with the bulging flank
Of its wide base controls the fronting bank,

High in the Fork the uncouth Idol knits

熱帯の大樹によくある、樹自体が森
頭に雲を戴き、河の下に
深い根を伸ばし、広い基礎の
突き出た幹で河岸を押さえ
（横から水流の圧力が掛かると
河岸は泡がたまった入り江になる）
樹の又には一文字に眉をしかめる
粗野な偶像。時おり低い呟き
暗闇に座す恐い形相の苦行僧。
広く伸びた枝の冠の恐怖が
野蛮な偶像崇拝に垂れ込める。
