バーバンクはベデカー社員が、ブライシュタインは葉巻がお供

エリオットがヴェニスに旅行したときの韻文による描写である。ヴェニスすなわち没落のシンボルであり、エリオット好みのテーマに事欠かない。この詩に登場するお金持ちのモデル、伯爵夫人、銀行家、ユダヤ人、プリンセス、サーの素性は完全に分かっているそうである。

バーバンクは小さな橋を渡り

プリンセス・ヴォルピーネ到着

１．灰色とピンクの色で思い出すのは大運河沿いの有名な宮殿カ・ドーロである。

２．カ・ドーロにはマンテーニャのセイバスティアンの殉教の絵があり、エリオットはそこでこのプラトンの言葉「神性にあらざれば常なるものなし。他は煙」を見たと述べている。

３．最後の詩節の「ライオン」であるが、福音記者の聖マルコはヴェニスの守護聖人であり、有翼の獅子で表象される。ヴェニスにはいたるところにライオン像がある。
