アスラに ―― サムエル・テイラー・コールリッジ

コールリッジはサラ・ハッチンソン（Sara Hutchinson）という女性に書いたラブ・レターである。この女性については良く知らないが、湖畔詩人とともに出てくる女性である。

シェークスピア風ソネット、すなわち韻の構造は
ABAB CDCD EFEF GG
である。

構造を見やすくするために4行ごとに区切りを入れる。

To Asra

Are there two things, of all which men possess,
That are so like each other and so near,
As mutual Love seems like to Happiness?
Dear Asra, woman beyond utterance dear!

「相愛」と「幸福」は似ているけど
人間が持ち合わせるものでこれほどに
互いに似て、近いものがあるだろうか？
言い表せないほど愛しい、愛しいアスラ！

いぜん僕の心に湧いたこの愛は
今や命の泉に波うち、落下し
今や僕の全身を通してあふれ
注ぎ込み、すべてを満たし、変える。

春の水が雪から出てくるよう。
僕の愛は成長の限界に達したに見えたが
なおも成長していくように思える。
