ある女の肖像 ―― エズラ・パウンド

「君はサラガッソ海」。「君」とは誰か？社交界で人気者になった女性がいたのであろう。毎度のことであるが、流暢にまくし立てられるとこちらはお手上げである。パウンドはサラガッソ海を冒頭に持ち出している。一度入り込んだらまず脱出不可能とされたサラガッソ海、船員は動物などを処分して奇跡的な生還の機会を空しく待った。この話が全体を支配しているように思えた。サラガッソ海にはもはや不要なものがいっぱい海底にある。「君はサラガッソ海」といわれた女性はガラクタの収集者である。題名に ”femme” とあるのは単なる洒落か、モデルの女性がフランス語を喋れたのかどうか。それとも “femme fatale” の省略か？詐欺とかの実害がある女性とも思えない。人気者になりたいだけの女性がいるからこそ社交界は成立する。なにもムキになることはないと思うが。

君と君の心は我らのサラガッソ海
ロンドンはこの二十年君のまわりに押し寄せ
豪華船は君に所持品をあれやこれや置いていった：
アイディア、古いうわさ話、ガラクタの数々
知識の奇妙な廃材、価値不明の品々。
知識人は君を追い求めた――他にだれもいない。
君はいつも二流品だった。悲しい？
いや。君はいつもまともな品より二流品を好んだ：
女房に甘くて鈍い、鈍くなる一方の男
知性は並み、年毎に知恵が減る一方の男。
君は辛抱強い、君は何時間も座っていた
そこで何かしらが広まったのだろう。
今度は君が払う。うん、君は気前よく払う。
君は関心を惹く人物だ、人は集まり
妙な儲けものを持っていく：
引き揚げた戦利品：奇妙な提案
話が二倍になる、役にも立たない事実
催淫剤か何かで妊娠した事実
有用性が証明されるかもしれないが、未だ証明されていない事実
間尺に合わないし、有用性を示していないし
昼間の柄にも間に合わない事実。
けばけばしく、今や変色した、お見事な骨董品：
偶像や竜涎香や珍奇な象眼細工
これが君の財産、君の宝石；
剥げ落ちた海の埋蔵品
とりどりの光と影の山車にのる
半分濡れた珍奇な木製か新品の素材
まったく何もない！一切合財
君の所有物は無価値。
だがこれが君だ。
