ロックのないドア ― ロバート・フロスト

ハリウッド製のサスペンス映画の一コマ。三歩格がこのスリラーに合っている。元々改築の必要な家だったのかもしれないが。

The lockless door

It went many years,
But at last came a knock,
And I thought of the door
With no lock to lock.

I blew out the light,
I tip-toed the floor,
And raised both hands
In prayer to the door.

But the knock came again
My window was wide;
I climbed on the sill
And descended outside.

Back over the sill
I bade a "Come in"
To whoever the knock
At the door may have been.

So at a knock
I emptied my cage
To hide in the world
And alter with age.

ずいぶん年月がたち
初めてのノックの音
だが、ドアにロックする
ロックがないのに気付く。

僕は灯を吹き消し
床をつま先立ちし
両手を合わせて
ドアに祈った。

再度ノックが。
窓は広いので
敷居にのぼり
外に下りた。

敷居によりかかり
「どうぞ」と
ノックしたらしい
人物に言った。

またもノックの音
僕は家を空け
当分身をかくし
その後家を改築した。
