暗やみのツグミ ―― トマス・ハーディ

大英帝国の偉大なる栄光の世紀は終わり、醜い残骸をさらす。誰もが元気をなくしていた。老いたツグミが必死に歌う夕べの祈りを聞き、話者はハッとしてツグミが希望を持っていることを悟る。

詩の形式は8音節と6音節を繰り返すバラッド形式である。一詩節は八行詩で、全部で４詩節からなる。あるいは4行詩が16あると考えてもよい。韻の構造は：

The Darkling Thrush

I leant upon a coppice gate

When Frost was spectre-grey,

And Winter's dregs made desolate

The weakening eye of day.

The tangled bine-stems scored the sky

Like strings of broken lyres,

And all mankind that haunted nigh

Had sought their household fires.

The land's sharp features seemed to be

The Century's corpse outleant,

His crypt the cloudy canopy,

The wind his death-lament.

The ancient pulse of germ and birth

Was shrunken hard and dry,

And every spirit upon earth

Seemed fervourless as I.

At once a voice arose among

The bleak twigs overhead

In a full-hearted evensong

Of joy illimited;

An aged thrush, frail, gaunt, and small,

Had chosen thus to fling his soul

暗闇のツグミ

僕は林の入り口にもたれていた。
　灰色の霜は亡霊のよう。
弱くなっていく太陽が
　冬のカスで惨めだった。
切れたリラの糸のように
　もつれたツルは空を刻み
近辺を歩く人々はみな
　家の火を求めた。

この国の特徴はといえば
　傾いた「前世紀」の遺骸のよう。
曇った天蓋が納骨堂
　風が哀悼の歌。
昔からの受胎と誕生の鼓動は
　乾いてしなび
地上のすべての霊は
　僕のように熱意がない。

すると暗い小枝から
　無上の喜びの
心こもった夕べの歌に
　声があがった。
突風で羽根は乱れ
　老いてやつれ、か弱い、小さなツグミが
広がる暗闇に
　魂を発散させた。

こんなに夢中になって
　聖歌をうたう原因は
近くも遠くも
　地上には見当たらない。
幸運な夜の空気を通して
　震えたのは、鳥が気付いた
何か嬉しい希望だろうが
　僕は気付かなかった。
