ハードウッドの森で ―― ロバート・フロスト

循環する植物の生態系にふれた詩である。特に目新しくなく、すでにシェリーが「北風の賦」で雄弁に語った状況である。最後は穏健な締めくくりである。

フロストの詩は毎回英語の勉強をさせられる。Howeverで悩んだが、これは私の勉強不足であるらしい。フロストの用法は普通の辞書では見当たらなかったが、ＯＥＤにはいくらでもあった。

詩は四歩格１２行、偶数行で韻を踏んでいる。

In Hardwood Groves

The same leaves over and over again!
They fall from giving shade above
To make one texture of faded brown
And fit the earth like a leather glove.

Before the leaves can mount again
To fill the trees with another shade,
They must go down past things coming up.
They must go down into the dark decayed.

They must be pierced by flowers and put
Beneath the feet of dancing flowers.
However it is in some other world
I know that this is way in ours.

ハードウッドの森で

同じ葉がなんども、なんども
もう日陰ではなくなり
うす茶色の布地になり
皮手袋のように地面に合う。

葉がもう一度上にのぼり
木々を日影でみたす前に
芽を出す物を必ずくぐる。
葉は黒い腐敗物を必ずくぐる。

葉は花につき抜かれ
踊る花の足下に伏す。
これは別世界のことであるが
我々の世界でも同様である。
