いつも緑のヒイラギ ―― ヘンリー八世

ヘンリー八世作の詩と音楽が残されている。彼の音楽に関してはマニアックなサイトもあるし、YouTube でも紹介されている。素人の私は下手なことは言わないほうがよい。Representative Poetry Online: RPO に選ばれている詩から “Green Groweth the Holly”を訳してみた。正妻だけでも六人の妻を所有した王が女性に真の愛を誓う詩である。彼も宮廷詩人の一人、忙しい王様である。

Green Groweth the Holly

Green groweth the holly,
So doth the ivy.
Though winter blasts blow never so high,
Green groweth the holly.

As the holly groweth green
And never changeth hue,
So I am, ever hath been,
Unto my lady true.

As the holly groweth green
With ivy all alone
When flowers cannot be seen
And greenwood leaves be gone,

Now unto my lady
Promise to her I make,
From all other only
To her I me betake.

Adieu, my special
Who hath my heart truly
Be sure, and ever shall.

いつも緑のヒイラギ
ツタもそう
冬の風は高く吹かないのに
いつも緑のヒイラギ。

ヒイラギはいつも緑で
色はかわらない
私も同じ、今も昔も
ご婦人にはまこと。

ヒイラギはいつも緑
ツタと一緒に
花も若葉も
なくなっても。

ここで今ご婦人に
私は約束します
だれよりも貴女が
好きなのですと。

さようなら、愛する方
さようなら、私の心を
つかんだお方よ
今も未来も信じてください。
