ブラックバードの１３通りの見方 ―― ウォーリス・スティーブンス

スティーブンスの詩はすでに著作権が切れているのが多い。ちょっと意外な気がする。彼は私が知った最もモダンなモダニストである。モダニストの詩の構造は意外にシンプルである。構造が見え難くいことはないのだが、意味内容は難解である。内容もさることながら、英語の文体を日本語に移植するのが難しい詩であった。

欧米で珍重されるブラックバード(クロウタドリ)の鳴き声をウィキではじめて聞いたが、なるほど美声である。１３通りの良さがあるとは、スティーブンスも相当のマニアである。

Among twenty snowy mountains,
The only moving thing
Was the eye of the blackbird.

Like a tree
In which there are three blackbirds.
