秋 ―― トマス・ホワイト・ハルム

Representative Poetry Online に選ばれているハルムの詩はこの詩と「エンバンクメント」だけである。第一次世界大戦が彼の経歴を断たれたこともあろうが、彼は理論家だったのかもしれない。今日の詩もイマジストの詩である。

Autumn

A touch of cold in the Autumn night --
I walked abroad,
And saw the ruddy moon lean over a hedge
Like a red-faced farmer.
I did not stop to speak, but nodded,
And round about were the wistful stars
With white faces like town children.

秋

肌寒い秋の夜――
僕は外を散歩し、見かけた
生垣にもたれる赤い月
赤ら顔の農夫のよう。

僕は会釈して通りすぎるが
まわりには貧相な星
白い顔の都会の子供のよう。
