中間色 ―― トマス・ハーディ

長く連れ添いながら晩年に離婚した妻のことだろう。彼女は離婚成立後まもなく死亡した。ハーディはそのことで悩んだようである。死んでみれば思い当たる節はあったが、そんなはずはないと思いたい。結局は辛い教訓を得ただけであった。悲観主義者のハーディはいつもくらい話をするが、神は悲観主義者を長生きさせることで罰してきた。彼は88歳という当時としては信じられない高齢で死んでいる。

Neutral Tones

We stood by a pond that winter day,
And the sun was white, as though chidden of God,
And a few leaves lay on the starving sod,
--They had fallen from an ash, and were gray.

Your eyes on me were as eyes that rove
Over tedious riddles solved years ago;
And some words played between us to and fro--
On which lost the more by our love.

The smile on your mouth was the deadest thing
