若き詩人の最初のヴィラネルの難儀 ―― ユージン・オニール

「劇中劇」というのがある。「劇中劇」が素人芝居であれば役者はわざとセリフをとちり、その劇を大失敗に終らせれば観衆から拍手喝さいである。今回のオニールの詩は「詩中詩」とも言うべきもの。ヘボ詩人がヴィラネルという形式の詩を書こうとして失敗に終る話である。ヘボ詩人の詩が稚拙であればあるほど、作者は喝采を受けるはずであるが。

ヴィラネルは詩中で二つの韻音しか許されない。一詩節は三行であり、第一行と第三行は同じ韻音である。これは難しく聞こえるが、ルールを逆手にとれば、今回のオニールのように楽な方法がある。下手な解説をするよりも有名なディラン・トーマスの詩 ”Do not go gentle into that good night”　を見ていただいた方が楽であろう。末尾に引用しておく。

ヘボ詩人はまず「ヴィラネル」と対になる「ロザベル」という女性を登場させる。内容はロザベルに捧げるヴィラネルである。これで詩の構造は決まったようなもの。ロザベルとヴィラネルが繰り返されるずるい詩である。これが許されるなら「イザベルに捧げるヴィラネル」、「マイケルに捧げるヴィラネル」でも替え歌はいくらでも製造できる。

ヴィラネル形式の作詩の失敗談であるから、途中でご丁寧に失敗をおかしている。
