Der alte Brunnen

昔学生時代にハンス・カロッサに夢中になった。今の若い人には人気ないのだろうか。昔の記憶をたどって原詩を探し出した。この詩を下手な英訳遊びのネタにしてはカロッサに申しわけないとは思っているが、わかりやすくて私の好きな詩である。

Der alte Brunnen

Lösch aus dein Licht und schlaf! Das immer wache
Gesplätscher nur vom alten Brunnen tönt.
Wer aber Gast war unter meinem Dache,
Hat sich stets bald an diesen Ton gewöhnt.

Zwar kann es einmal sein, wenn du schon mitten
Im Traume bist, daß Unruh geht ums Haus,
Der Kies beim Brunnen knirscht von harten Tritten,
Das helle Plätschern setzt auf einmal aus,

Und du erwachst, — dann mußt du nicht erschrecken!
Die Sterne stehn vollzählig überm Land,
Und nur ein Wandrer trat ans Marmorbecken,
Der schöpft vom Brunnen mit der hohlen Hand.

Er geht gleich weiter. Und es rauscht wie immer.
O freue dich, du bleibst nicht einsam hier.
Viel Wandrer gehen fern im Sternenschimmer,
Und mancher noch ist auf dem Weg zu dir.

The Old Fountain

Put off the light and keep aloof
From our watcher, the rippling old fount!
No one who stayed under my roof
Has been disturbed by the sound.

You may already go to your dream,
When a man comes with creaking spikes.
To break the serene night a while.
The clean water is interrupted to stream.

And you awake, - but don't be surprised ever.
With twinkling stars the heaven is veiled over.
Against the marble basin he stands
And scoops water with his own hands.

It resumes rippling, as he goes further.
Be delighted, you are not alone any longer.
In the starlight, see travellers beyond.
And hear footsteps from behind.
