December

今月のベリー公の時祷書の暦は再びランブール兄弟によるものである。クリスマス・イブの料理に供するためのイノシシ狩りである。ベリー公は１０月３０日にこの背景にある城で生まれている。

Edith Holden の日記によれば、９９年前の Warｗickshire の１２月１日は北西の冷たい風が吹き、晴朗であった。今月の彼女のお気に入りの詩は R. Southey の Winter である。


Winter

A wrinkled crabbed man they picture thee,
Old Winter, with a rugged beard as grey
As the long moss upon the apple-tree;
Blue-lipt, an icedrop at thy sharp blue nose,
Close muffled up, and on thy dreary way
Plodding alone through sleet and drifting snows.
They should have drawn thee by the high-heapt hearth,
Old Winter! seated in thy great armed chair,
Watching the children at their Christmas mirth;
Or circled by them as thy lips declare
Some merry jest, or tale of murder dire,
Or troubled spirit that disturbs the night,
Pausing at times to rouse the mouldering fire,
Or taste the old October brown and bright.

冬

年老いた冬よ、汝の像は、リンゴの木のこけのように
白髪交じりの長い髭を生やした
しわだらけの気むずかしい老人だ。
頭をすっぽり覆い、唇は血の気がなく、
とがった鼻にはつららがたれ、ミゾレまじりの吹きつもった雪を
とぼとぼと一人わびしく歩んでいく。
大勢が集まった暖炉に呼ばれたのだろう、
おお冬よ！汝は大きな肘掛け椅子に腰を下ろし、
クリスマスではしゃぐ子供達を見つめている。
子供達に取り囲まれ、汝の口からは陽気な冗談
や怖いお話や夜を騒がすさまよう幽霊の話が出てくる。
時々話を止め、消えかかった火を掻き起こし、
１０月に出来たきれいな茶色のビールに口をつける。
