猪の頭

１２月１日のベリー公のカレンダーで猪狩りの絵を紹介したが、今回はこの猪の料理の話である。

これがなくてはクリスマスが始まらないメイン・ディッシュの「猪の頭」である。これが登場するさいに歌われる古来からの有名なクリスマス・ソングを紹介しよう。教会は１２月２５日にキリストが誕生したことに決定したが、一部のお堅いお坊さんが、愚かな大衆がキリストが大酒のみであったかのように誤解するのではと心配した。はたして、厳粛であるべきクリスマスは以前と変わらぬどんちゃん騒ぎのシーズンであった。領主、騎士は家にみなを招待してふるまい、一月６日の三賢者のキリスト訪問までの１２日間はしゃぎ回ったのである。ラッパが鳴り、歌いながら召使いが金や銀の皿に盛った「猪の頭」を持って登場する。

今回はラテン語とふるい英語でいささか苦労したが興味深かった。
