１００年前のウォーリックシャーの２月１日の天気は晴朗であるが、厚い霜がおりて寒かったそうである。Edith Holden の今月の詩は上田敏の訳詩で有名なロバート・ブラウニングと恋愛結婚で結ばれたエリザベス・ブラウニング(Elizabeth Barrett Browning [1806-1861]の「エニシダの教え（LESSONS FROM THE GORSE）」である。


LESSONS FROM THE GORSE

Mountain gorses, ever-golden,
Cankered not the whole year long!
Do ye teach us to be strong,
Howsoever pricked and holden,
Like your thorny blooms, and so
Trodden on by rain and snow,
Up the hill-side of this life, as bleak as where ye grow?

いつも黄金色で一年中
しおれることがないエニシダよ！
あなたの棘のついた花のように
どうしたら強くなれるか教えておくれ。
どんなにいじめられ、抑えつけられても
雨や雪にうたれても
人生の荒涼とした丘の斜面でも成長できるの？

Mountain blossoms, shining blossoms,
Do ye teach us to be glad
When no summer can be had,
Blooming in our inward bosoms?
Ye whom God preserveth still,
Set as lights upon a hill,
Tokens to the wintry earth that Beauty liveth still!

輝く山の花よ、
どうしたら幸せになれるか教えておくれ。
たとえ夏でなくても
私たちの心に咲くの？
神様が丘の上の光として
美人が静かに冬の大地に生きている
ことの証としておかれたのね。

From that academic chair
Canopied with azure air,
That the wisest word man reaches
Is the humblest he can speak?
Ye, who live on mountain peak,
Yet live low along the ground, beside the grasses meek!

エニシダよ、教えておくれ
青き大気をあおぐ
高い教壇から
聴けるもっとも賢い言葉は
もっとも謙虚な言葉ではないかしら？
山の頂で暮らしながら、
あなたは従順な草とつつましく活きている。

Knelt beside you on the sod,
For your beauty thanking God, -
For your teaching, ye should see us
Bowing in prostration new!
Whence arisen, - if one or two
Drops be on our cheeks - O world, they are not tears but dew.

エニシダよ、リンネが
あなたの美しさを神様に感謝して
芝のあなたにひざまづきました。
わたしたちはあなたの教えのゆえに
あなたにひれ伏します。
立ち上がり、一粒か二粒の滴が頬に落ちても
涙ではなく、露なのです。
