バラ賛歌

前々回の投稿では、伝サッフォー作、ブラウニング夫人訳のバラの歌を紹介したが、エディス・ホールデンの絵日記ではブラウニング夫人の最初の二行を省略してあった。ここに全文を紹介するとともに、イギリスのイタリア研究者であり、おそらくブラウニング夫人より後に英語訳したと思われるサイモンズの訳を見つけたので紹介する。二人が共通するサッフォー作とされる詩を読んだことは間違いない。二人の訳を比較すると面白いので二行追加してブラウニング夫人に再登場願うことにした。

伝サッフォー作は奇数行の詩である。英語は詩には難しい言葉だから、対句が精一杯である。奇数行の詩をどう処理するかだが、ブラウニング夫人の訳は一行韻を踏んでいない。サイモンズは３行同韻にしてある。なお前回投稿のブラウニング夫人訳の和訳を修正しているが、自信があるわけではない。ただサイモンズ訳に影響されたというのが正直なところである。



Song of Rose

If Zeus chose us a king of the flowers in his mirth,
He would call to the Rose and would royally crown it,
For the Rose, ho, the Rose, is the grace of the earth,
Is the light of the plants that are growing upon it.

For the Rose, ho, the Rose, is the eye of the flowers,

一つの花を君臨させるとしたら、
