万物には終焉がある -- テニスン

「今日の詩」は暗い詩が続くが、今日も悲観的な詩である。しかしながら、作者はヴィクトリア朝の優等生である桂冠詩人テニスンである。これが詩的というものだろう。ヴィクトリア女王が大好きであったと理由で、イギリス帝国主義の象徴である彼女といっしょに反発の対象になったテニスン。音楽家のメンデルスゾーンも被害者の一人である。分野は違うが二人とも大変な名人であり、忘れえぬ芸術家である。

Clearly the blue river chimes in its flowing

Under my eye;
Warmly and broadly the south winds are blowing

Over the sky.
One after another the white clouds are fleeting;
Every heart this May morning in joyance is beating

Full merrily;
Yet all things must die.
The stream will cease to flow;

The clouds will cease to fleet;

万物には終焉がある

いかにも青き川は音を立てて流れている
見下ろせば
温かい南の風があたり一面吹いている

見上げれば
白い雲は次々になびいている
五月の朝　心臓皆喜びで鼓動している

確かに陽気だ。
だが万物には終焉がある。
川は流れを止め
風は吹き止み
雲は動かず
心臓は鼓動を止めるのは
万物には終焉があるからだ。
万物には終焉がある。
春が再び訪れることはない。
ああ空なるかな！
死は扉で待っている。
見よ！わが友は皆
酒宴を断った。
われらは呼ばれ去るのだ。
われらは休むのは
低く暗い所。
陽気な歓声は静まる。

この詩ずっと眺め渡さなければいけないが、探せば同韻の対を見つけることができる。一つだけ対がわからない単語があった。range である。こんなこと詮索する人間は詩を観賞する資格がないのかもしれない。完璧な韻を心がける詩人は大方三流である。でも作者はイギリス詩壇の大御所テニスンである。ちょっと不思議な気がする。
