何といっても -- ヘンリー・ローソン

植民地時代のオーストラリアで最も有名なヘンリー・ローソンが「今日の詩人」である。といっても私はまったく知らなかった。オーストラリアではつい最近まで彼の肖像画がお札に載っていたたほどの人物だそうだ。訳していて今後も彼の詩を送ってくるかもしれないと思った。英語圏で人気のある詩人だろう。”After All”という題を「何といっても」と訳した。


After All


The brooding ghosts of Australian night have gone from the bush and town;
My spirit revives in the morning breeze,
though it died when the sun went down;
The river is high and the stream is strong,
and the grass is green and tall,
And I fain would think that this world of ours is a good world after all.

The light of passion in dreamy eyes, and a page of truth well read,
The glorious thrill in a heart grown cold of the spirit I thought was dead,
A song that goes to a comrade's heart, and a tear of pride let fall --
And my soul is strong! and the world to me is a grand world after all!、

Let our enemies go by their old dull tracks,
and theirs be the fault or shame
(The man is bitter against the world who has only himself to blame);

For I must believe that the world, my dear, is a kind world after all.

It well may be that I saw too plain, and it may be I was blind;

though the devil may stand behind!

But read the signs in the morning stars of a good world after all.

Rest, for your eyes are weary, girl -- you have driven the worst away --
The ghost of the man that I might have been is gone from my heart to-day;
We'll live for life and the best it brings till our twilight shadows fall;
My heart grows brave, and the world, my girl, is a good world after all.

何といっても

立ちこめるオーストラリアの夜の霊は茂と町から去った。
太陽が沈んだときに失せた僕の気力は
朝の風と共に甦り
川は水かさを増し　流れは強くなり
緑の草は伸び
何といっても僕らの世界は良いのだと思う。

夢見ごこちの目の情熱の光も　いくども読んだ真実の書も
輝ける感動の心もいつし冷え　跡形もなくなったようだ
友人の心に訴える歌　誇りの涙も消えるがよい
僕には気力がある！何といっても世界は僕にとって偉大なのだ。

僕らの敵はいつもの路を通るがよい
連中は恥や過ちを犯すがよい
（自分に咎めがある者ほど世界には厳しいのだ）
過去の闇の部分は忘れ　良いことだけ思い出そう。
僕は信じるよ　何といっても世界は親切なのだ。

僕の見方は単純だろうし　僕には見る目がないだろう。
でも僕は夜明けの光を見つめている
悪魔が後にいるかもしれない！
悪魔が僕の後にいても　僕は悪魔の影を見ずに
宵の明星から兆を読みとろう　何といっても世界は良い。

君の目は疲れているから休むがいい　―　君は最悪を乗り切った　―
僕のこれまでの霊はたった今僕から出ていった。
二人でともに生きれば最善が訪れる　僕らの黄昏の影が落ちるまで。
僕には勇気がある　それに何といっても世界は良いのだ。
