希望には翼があり -- エミリー・ディキンソン

キリスト教の三大基徳とされる信仰・希望・愛のうち、最もキリスト教的とされる徳目は「希望」である。「希望」は他の宗教との違いを表す徳目である。その意味で次の歌をたんなる叙情詩と解釈すべきではないと思う。最後の詩節の２行は報酬を求めぬキリスト教の「愛」を表現している。


Hope is the thing with feathers

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune--without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.
