「何故に悲しみの涙を流すと尋ぬるや？」 -- テニスン

「今日の詩」の選者が送ってきたのはテニスンの「何故に悲しみの涙を流すと尋ぬるや？」 であった。こんな詩が流行した時代が懐かしい。タイトルは最初の一行であり、オヴィディウスのラテン語の副題が付いている。よく分からなかったが、色々調べてみると‘Te somnia nostra reducunt.’ は ’my dreams bring you back’の意である という解説がフォーラムにあった。これを信じることにする。

なお今回の詩で登場するエリジアンとはギリシャ神話の「死後の世界」である。諸説あるが、「西方浄土」に近いのもあった。そんな所かと思いながら訳をした。さらにアマランサスは永遠の命のシンボルともされる想像上の花である。
