靴 -- キップリング

数日前の「今日の詩」である。キップリングは私のように単純でいつまでたっても学生っぽい分類をする人間には理解に苦しむ詩人である。キプリングは桂冠詩人の称号も爵位も拒否している。権威に対して毅然としているようである。

反戦的にも見える詩を書いている。彼は「バラクラバの戦闘」に生き残った兵隊たちの末路を語った詩 ”The Last of the Light Brigade” の作者である。桂冠詩人であり、男爵になったテニスンの愛国的な詩 ”The charge of the Light Brigade” を揶揄する内容である。

「愛国的」な詩を批判した人物が「非愛国的」であると結論づけることはできない。彼は紛れもない帝国主義者である。白人が世界の歴史の中で指導的な役割をはたすべきだと考えていた。この帝国主義の主張と彼のイギリスの兵士達への憐憫の心は矛盾するものではないらしい。若げの至りであり、彼も大人になったのだという人もいる。

そもそも反戦的か好戦的かという分類が無意味であり、詩の鑑賞に有害なのかもしれない。

キップリング



ここで注記することがある。第５詩節 “bandolier“ という語が出てくるが、弾帯と訳した。帯状の弾入れで肩から提げるものである。これを数えろというものであろうか。第５詩節は誤訳の可能性大である。

脱線しそうだが、 ”forty thousand million” というのが第７詩節に出てくる。直訳すれば４００億ということになる。ＯＥＤで用例を調べてみた。まあ「途方もなく」という意味である。「白髪三千丈」どうように語呂が良いのであろうか。

訳し終わって気になるのはハイフォン “-“ である。果てしない行軍と息切れを表現するためと解釈した。
