ネズミに -- バーンズ

風邪を口実に８日間かけて訳したが、今日は全文纏めて訳してみようと想う。繰り返しになるが、題名は “To A Mouse” 「ネズミに」である。バーンズの「スコトランド」英語の次に私なりに解釈した「標準英語」を併記する。

でもお前は僕に比べれば幸せさ
お前が関心あるのは現在だけ。
オット、僕の目は後の方を向く。
恐ろしい将来やら！
見えないのに前の方に目を向け
憶測したり、恐れたりしている。

バーンズ

大理石の戦車 -- リルケ

今日のリルケの詩は “Der Marmor-Karren” 「大理石の戦車」である。勝利者の凱旋行進の様子を大理石像に彫りこんだものらしい。実在する彫刻なのかも分からず、内容も雲を掴むような感じはいつもの通りである。これ以上眺めていても仕方がないので、早く模範答案を見たいので投稿して先を急ぐことにした。

あいにくパリの石像ではなく、ベルリンのブランデンブルク門の上にある四頭立ての戦車に登場を願った。誤訳かもしれないが、七頭立ての戦車は見たことがない。

Auf Pferde, sieben ziehende, verteilt,
verwandelt Niebewegtes sich in Schritte;

不動の馬の違いは歩調のみ。
年齢、均衡、空間は見事に
大理石の中央に保たれるが

親愛なる友へ

ウィーンを発つまでに、奥さんのお淑やかなペンを模倣してこの封筒を埋めなければと思っていたのです。この度の大きな小包を感謝したいと思いました。まずはわたしの喜びと感謝の意を表します。

でもそれはできませんでした。とくに一つのことが引っ掛かります。今回いつも以上に私たちの作品間の類似性が印象に残りました。コラール、四重奏、歌曲を見渡して、いずれもこれまでの私の努力をまざまざと想起させるので、私は大変いらいらしました。あなたが同様に過去を振り返るときがあるとき、私のいらいらより楽しいものであることを祈ります。

しかし今日この環境では、私たちの音楽の問題に入り込む気はありません。私の好奇心を惹くことがあります。

あなた方が今日ハンブルク(1)に行ったという趣旨の記事を私はちょうど今読みました。それについて一部始終をとくにお訊きしたいのです。この町はたまたま快晴であれば良いでしょう。私たちの尊敬すべき仲間は精一杯努力して何の成果も上げなかったと私は想像するのですが。例によって可もなく不可もなくというところですか。当のパーティーにはシュペンゲルの名前がなかったが、彼はあなたとあなたの音楽を問題にしている中心人物です。

(1)ヘルツォーゲンベルクの作品のいくつかがハンブルク音楽協会で5月23日に演奏された。これには弦楽四重奏曲(作品42の3)、ピアノ二重奏のためのワルツ(作品53)、作品26の女声のための合唱曲(演奏はシュヴェンケ指揮ジング・アカデミー(Singakademie)。ヘルツォーゲンベルク夫妻はこのコンサートのため特別にハンブルクへ出かけた。
