THE EVENING comes

THE EVENING comes, the field is still.
The tinkle of the thirsty rill,
Unheard all day, ascends again;
Deserted is the new-reap’d grain,
Silent the sheaves! the ringing wain,
The reaper’s cry, the dogs’ alarms,
All housed within the sleeping farms!
The business of the day is done,
The last belated gleaner gone.
And from the thyme upon the height,
And from the elder-blossom white
And pale dog-roses in the hedge,
And from the mint-plant in the sedge,
In puffs of balm the night-air blows
The perfume which the day forgoes.
And on the pure horizon far,
See, pulsing with the first-born star,
The liquid sky above the hill!

夕暮

夕暮の野原は静かだ。
渇いた小川のせせらぎが、
日中は聞かなかったが、戻った。
刈り取られた麦は野に置かれ、
静寂である。束の音、荷車の鈴も、
刈り取りの声、犬の吠える声も。
皆寝を取りに農場に戻った。
この日の仕事は終わり、
遅れた落ち穂拾いも帰った。
丘のタイムや
生け垣の白バラや
スゲのミント、昼の間
控えていた香りを、
清らかな地平にとどけと
夜の大気が一吹きする。
星を数えながら見よう
丘の向こうに流れる空を。
夜が来た、野は静かだ。

Le soir

Au soir d’or c’est très tranquille dans le champ.
Le ruisselet commence de joie son chant ;
Qui le jour on ne entende pas il sonner
Désert est le nouveau grain moissonné
Gardez le silence, la gerbe, abandonnez!
Un homme crie, un chien commence à aboyer
Toute sont charmé de renter au foyer
L’œuvre du jour est fini de mains vive
On n’y voit rien que la glaneuse tardive
A partir de la bell thym blue pervenche
Et à partir de la vieille fleurs blanche
Et à partir du églantier entouré de la haie
Et à partir de la menthe verte ce soir frais,
Le vent souffle et la nuit est ravivé
Par le parfum que le jour s’a privée.
Au bel horizon lointain le ciel est
Juste décoré par l’étoile premier-né
Au-dessous du ciel d’or l’oiseaux sans chant,
Au soir calme sont la colline et le champ.

日が暮れて静かな野原。
これまで聞かなかった
歌を小川は唄い始め
刈った穀物を投げ出し
穂は静かに、止めろ！
男が叫び、犬が吠え出し
みな楽しげに暖炉に戻り
一日の仕事は順調に終り
落穂拾いの女が一人だけ
青紫の綺麗なタイムから
しなびた白い花から
生垣に囲まれた野バラから
涼しい夜の緑のミントから
日中は慎んでいた香を
風が吹かし、夜は生き返る。
遥かなる地平線の空は
一番星で飾られたばかり
金色の空の下、鳥も黙り
静かな夕暮に野山は静か。

意外に仏訳には苦労した。英語の生みの親ではないにしても、育ての親であるフランス語の詩も「英雄韻」という限定があると、また一部誤魔化しをした。原詩では落ち穂拾いの人も家路に着いたことになっているが、落穂拾いの女がただ一人残っていることにせざるを得なかった。女一人にすることで、音節数を１０以内に抑えることが出来た。全員帰ってしまった時の情景描写が私の語学力では不可能であった。さらに最後の描写は直訳ではない。どうしても韻を揃えるには組み替えなければいけなかった。
