考えなおしてみるのだ！ アーサー・ヒュー・クラッフ

サーシスことアーサー・ヒュー・クラッフ（Arthur Hugh Clough 1819 – 1861）の伝記を少しかじってしまった。このことがAh! Yet Consider it Again! の題名の訳「考えなおしてみるのだ！」にも悪い影響がなければいいのだが。私は暗示に罹りやすく、思い込みが激しい。ひとまず先入観からの翻訳を報告することにしよう。

クラッフがイギリス国教会のあり方に疑問を抱いていたという記述をウィキペディアで読んだが、その線に沿って解釈してみた。大土地所有者の教会のために営々として働き、農民が手にしたものは、農民一人当たり数ヤードの自由なる空間である。土地所有の不平等は明らかであるのに、農民は日々新しい真理を無自覚に受け入れていく。この不平等を「考えなおそう」としない労働者への苛立ちを表現している。

再考してみるのだ！

「古き物は古きがゆえに正しからず」
同胞よ、新しき物とて同じこと。
しばらくは古き思想を手放さず
考えなおしてみるのだ！

今にいたるまで二千年
人々はここに苦役と涙と
苦痛の報酬を貯えた ―
考えなおしてみるのだ！

我らが、我らが見る物は？
一人当たり数ヤードの空間。
これで広い地図を説明できるのか？
考えなおしてみるのだ！

人々は皆道を進んでいき
日々新しき真理を悟る。
それを拒否もせず、手放しもせず
考えなおしもしない！
