France: an Ode �� Forgive me, Freedom! O forgive those dreams! I hear thy voice, I hear thy loud lament, From bleak Helvetia's icy caverns sent- I hear thy groans upon her blood-stained streams! Heroes, that for your peaceful country perished, And ye that, fleeing, spot your mountain-snows With bleeding wounds; forgive me, that I cherished One thought that ever blessed your cruel foes! To scatter rage, and traitorous guilt, Where Peace her jealous home had built; A patriot-race to disinherit Of all that made their stormy wilds so dear; And with inexpiable spirit To taint the bloodless freedom of the mountaineer- O France, that mockest Heaven, adulterous, blind, And patriot only in pernicious toils! 「君はサラガッソ海」。「君」とは誰か？社交界で人気者になった女性がいたのであろう。毎度のことであるが、流暢にまくし立てられるとこちらはお手上げである。パウンドはサラガッソ海を冒頭に持ち出している。一度入り込んだらまず脱出不可能とされたサラガッソ海、船員は動物などを処分して奇跡的な生還の機会を空しく待った。この話が全体を支配しているように思えた。サラガッソ海にはもはや不要なものがいっぱい海底にある。「君はサラガッソ海」といわれた女性はガラクタの収集者である。題名に ”femme” とあるのは単なる洒落か、モデルの女性がフランス語を喋れたのかどうか。それとも “femme fatale” の省略か？詐欺とかの実害がある女性とも思えない。人気者になりたいだけの女性がいるからこそ社交界は成立する。なにもムキになることはないと思うが。 Portrait d'une Femme Your mind and you are our Sargasso Sea, London has swept about you this score years And bright ships left you this or that in fee: Ideas, old gossip, oddments of all things, Strange spars of knowledge and dimmed wares of price.
