田舎の女 ―― キャサリン・マンスフィールド

キャサリン・マンスフィールドの短編では主役にならない、たくましい田舎の女。描写は簡潔である。病弱で神経質な彼女には羨ましくて仕方がないと解釈した。

Countrywomen

These be two
Country women.
What a size!
Great big arms
And round red faces;
Big substantial
Sit down places;
Great big bosoms firm as cheese
Bursting through their country jackets;
Wide big laps
And sturdy knees;
Hands outspread,
Round and rosy,
Hands to hold
A country posy
Or a baby or a lamb --
And such eyes!
Stupid, shifty, small and sly
Peeping through a slit of sty,
Squinting through their neighbours' plackets.

大きく頑丈で
腰掛けても大丈夫。
大きな乳房は硬いチーズ
上着から突き出し。
太い腿と
頑丈な膝。
広げた手は
丸くバラ色
つかめるのは
田舎の花束
乳飲み子、子羊――
　それにこの眼
学がなく、抜け目がなく、落ち着きがない
小屋のわれ目からのぞいて
人の財布をぬすみみている。

Anecdote of Canna

Huge are the canna in the dreams of
X, the mighty thought, the mighty man.
They fill the terrace of his capitol.

His thought sleeps not. Yet thought that wakes
In sleep may never meet another thought
Or thing....Now day-break comes...

X promenades the dewy stones,
Observes the canna with a clinging eye,
Observes and then continues to observe.

偉大な人物、偉大な想念。
カンナは彼の神殿のテラスを満たす。

彼の想念は眠らぬ。だが夢で目覚めた想念は

....ついに夜が明ける...

Ｘは霜のおりた石をあるき
カンナをしげしげと見つめる
見つめ、見つめつづける。
