エミリー・ディキンソンの詩は簡潔極まりない。簡潔な詩はサッと読解してこそ真意が伝わる。一詩節10分、今日の詩であれば30分以上の時間を掛けてはいけない。私はこの詩を読み始めて日本語に苦労して二日経過している。これ以上時間を掛けるとますます彼女が言わんとした内容から遠ざかる。釈然としないまま投稿する。なんかの拍子にいい日本語が浮かぶかもしれない。 今日の詩は Sun という言葉が登場する。彼女が太陽を描くとき Sun という言葉は出てこない。おそらく素質があり、名声を博している人物だが、必ずしも尊敬する気になれない。引きこもりの彼女にも人並みの名誉欲があったのかもしれない。気がかりな人物に対する不安を表現していると解釈した。誰のことを言っているのかは研究者に任せるとしよう。 Superfluous were the Sun Superfluous were the Sun When Excellence be dead; He were superfluous every Day, For every Day be said That syllable whose Faith Just saves it from Despair And whose "I'll meet You" hesitates If Love inquire "Where? スティーブンスは詩で絵を描いてきたが、今回は音楽、それも音楽劇「スザンナ」を詩で表現した。ワイルド＝シュトラウスの「サロメ」を意識したのであろうか。私にはよくわからない。タイトルにだけ登場する「ピーター・クインス」は「真夏の夜の夢」に登場する職人の名前だそうである。この詩に付曲した作曲家が二人いるそうである。 Peter Quince at the Clavier I
