太陽が登場すると
一変する世界――
荷馬車は走り回る使者
昨日は古い――

人々は出会うと
各自の独占ニュース――
新鮮なバティツェの荷
自然の高級品。

バティツェはイタリア北部にそのような地名があった。エミリーがどう発音したのかもわからない。

雪を見る人 ―― ウォーリス・スティーブンス

ウォーリス・スティーブンスは、鳥も歌わぬ冬の中に「無」を聴き、白銀の世界に「無」を眺める機会がある、とする。禅の精神である。20世紀初頭の文化人流行したようである。モダニストのスティーブンスがさっそく取り上げている。彼の作品としては悪ふざけもなく、意外性がない。読みやすい作品である。

The Snow Man

One must have a mind of winter
To regard the frost and the boughs
Of the pine-trees crusted with snow;

And have been cold a long time
To behold the junipers shagged with ice,
The spruces rough in the distant glitter

Of the January sun; and not to think
Of any misery in the sound of the wind,
In the sound of a few leaves,

Which is the sound of the land
Full of the same wind
That is blowing in the same bare place

For the listener, who listens in the snow,
And, nothing himself, beholds
Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is.

雪を見る人

人間は冬の心があって
霜を見つめ、雪の皮をかぶった
松の枝を見つめることが出来る。

長時間冷え切りながら
雪で凍てついたトショウ
一月の遠い太陽光線に

ざらつくトウヒを眺める。
風の音、わずかな葉の音に
惨めな気分になることはない。

これは大地の音
同じ場所に吹いている
いつもと変わらぬ風。

雪の中で聴く人に吹く
己を空しくして、今存在しない無と
存在する無を見つめる人に吹く。
