一般に死の令状は ―― エミリー・ディキンソン

エミリーは信仰のために死んだ人の理由を考える。彼らは自己の死を選択した人である。彼らのこだわりには世間の通念がある。そう解釈して訳してみた。この詩は格好のディベイトのネタである。

信者は十字架や
処刑台に身を委ねた。

Death warrants 「死刑執行令状」。死すべき我らは生まれた時から突きつけられている。

enginery は古代の「攻城兵器」。enginery of equity は「平等な攻城兵器」、「無差別兵器」

merciful mistake は「思い遣りある誤謬」、「誤った安楽（死）」

pencil はメモを取るもの。

僕が作業をするのは ―― ディラン・トーマス

ディラン・トーマス という名前は聞いたことがある。1953年没の彼の詩には著作権問題が絡む。なぜかウィキソースにあったのが ” In my Craft or Sullen Art” である。

今回の詩でディランが主張しているのは、自分は名もない詩の「職人」であり、同じく名もない庶民に好かれたらそれで満足だという話である。調子は親しみやすいが、彼独特の用語法があるようだ。

And the lovers lie abed
With all their griefs in their arms,
I labour by singing light
Not for ambition or bread
Or the strut and trade of charms
On the ivory stages
