死者の歌 ― ウィリアム・モリス

ウェッブの注釈によれば、社会主義者ウィリアム・モリスは1887年11月18日にロンドンで起きた劣悪な労働環境におかれたアイルランド労働者を中心とするデモ（血の日曜日Bloody Sunday）で死亡した人を悼んで詩をかいた。ロンドンの東（イースト・エンド）に住む労働者が西（ウェスト・エンド）に住む資本家に要求のデモをして、警察と軍隊に鎮圧された。詩の冒頭で「西から東に進む」とあるのは鎮圧された労働者が戻ってくることを意味している。

五歩格の詩で各詩節の韻の構造は
ABABCC
である。

What cometh here from west to east awending?
And who are these, the marchers stern and slow?

金持ちに知って欲しいと頼んだのだ。
連中が昼を闇にしたければ、連中が殺す人数は

連中はパンの話なら暇な時にと言った。

牢獄をぶち壊せという合図が横になっている。
嵐のさなか彼は囚人の安息を勝ち取った。
