騎士の墓 ― サムエル・テイラー・コールリッジ

この詩はコールリッジの生前に発表されていない。だが、生前に友人を通してスコットが知ることになり、出版を待ちきれずに「アイヴァンホー」で借用している。コールリッジはやはり影響力のある詩人であった。

Where is the grave of Sir Arthur O'Kellyn?
Where may the grave of that good man be?―
By the side of a spring, on the breast of Helvellyn,
Under the twigs of a young birch tree!
The oak that in summer was sweet to hear,
And rustled its leaves in the fall of the year,
And whistled and roared in the winter alone,
Is gone,--and the birch in its stead is grown.―
The Knight's bones are dust,
And his good sword rust;--
His soul is with the saints, I trust.

騎士の墓

サー・アーサー・オケリンの墓は何処？
かの良き人の墓は何処？
ヘルヴェリン山中腹の泉のほとり
樺の若木の小枝の下に！
夏には優しき音を立て

あの樫も逝き ― 樺が代わって伸びた ―
