猫の命名 ― ＴＳエリオット

久しぶりに仕事がはかどった。エリオットは有名な猫派である。猫の性質は古来多くの人が分析してきたが、エリオットはそれを「猫の命名」というテーマで巧妙に論じている。彼のノーベル賞受賞に積極的に貢献した詩とは思えないが、彼の巧みな話術はやはり大家のものである。

エリオットの作品が元になり「キャッツ」というミュージカルができたそうである。私は上演されたことを知っているし、主題歌も記憶がある。結局は経済に余裕がなかったのだろう。ところで「キャッツ」をご覧になった方あるいは猫好きの方。皆さんはエリオットの今日の詩 The Naming of Cats をご存知だろうか。

この詩は時々韻を踏んでいる。行末に name が頻出するし、これと対になる単語は結構あるからとくに技巧を凝らした詩ではない。

ただし最後には辞書にはない言葉 Effanineffable （エリオットの造語）が登場した。日本人としても造語しなければいけないが、今の所考えあぐねている。いい訳があればご提案願いたい。

The Naming of Cats

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have Three Different Names.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey--
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter--
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum-
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover--
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

猫に名前をつけるのは難儀です
休日の気晴らしなどではないですぞ。
私が猫には三つの名前があると言い出せば
私は気が狂っているとお思いでしょう。
何よりも家族が使う名前があります。
ピーター、オウグストュス、アロンゾ、ジェイムスとか
ヴィクター、ジョナサン、ジョージ、ビル・ベイリー　――
みな日常にふさわしい名前ばかり。
上品な名前をお考えならおしゃれな名前
紳士向きの名前、ご婦人向きの名前
プラト、アドメテウス、エレクトラ、ディメーテル ――
だがこれもみな日常にふさわしい名前。
ですが、猫には特別な名前がいりますぞ
珍しくてしかも威厳のある名前、でなければ
猫が尻尾を真っ直ぐに立てられますか？
猫がひげを広げ、プライドがもてますか？
数は限られていますが、この種の名前は
マンカストラップ、クオゾ、コリコパットとか
ボンバルリナか、それともジェリロラム ――
けっして二匹とない名前ですぞ。
それはさておき、一つ忘れている名前があります。
あなたがけっして思いもつかない名前です。
人間が調べても発見できない名前――
だが猫はちゃんと知っているのに白状しません。
猫が深い瞑想に浸るのを見たことがありましょう
理由は、いいですか、同じなのです。
猫の心は夢見心地の瞑想に耽っています
自分の名前を考えて、考えて、考えているのです
いうにいわれぬ
曖明なる
底知れず深い唯一の名前をです。
