詩 ―― サムエル・テイラー・コールリッジ

コールリッジの淋しいが平穏であった晩年の1825年の作品である。諦観の域に達した詩人の愛の歌である。コールリッジの愛の遍歴に詳しくないのでそれ以上は言いようがない。

四歩格英雄韻の2詩節よりなる詩である。韻の構造は
AABBBBCC
である。

Song

Tho' veiled in spires of myrtle-wreath,
Love is a sword that cuts its sheath,
And thro' the clefts, itself has made,
We spy the flashes of the Blade!

But thro' the clefts, itself has made,
We likewise see Love's flashing blade,
By rust consumed or snapt in twain :
And only Hilt and Stump remain.

美神の花冠の葉に隠れても
愛は鞘を裂く剣
裂け目から自らを育み

出会いと通過 ―― ロバート・フロスト

フロストの愛のソネットである。男女が出会い、砂ホコリに二人の足跡を重ねたらしい。足の大きさは文字通り１フィートである。彼女はたたんだ日傘を持っていたらしい。このフィートのそば日傘で「・」の跡をつけた。それを「小数点を打つ」と洒落たのであろう。

伝統的な五歩格の詩である。韻の構造を調べるのもフロストの詩の楽しみである。最後の passed を thrust dust と同韻とみなせば、韻の構造は

ABBA ABBA CDCD DD

となる。14行の詩の末尾を４韻にしている。

[wall, all, small, parasol] [view, you, drew, two] [see, me] [thrust, dust, passed]

何型のソネットか知らない。あえて言えば、フロスト型だろうか？

Meeting And Passing

As I went down the hill along the wall

There was a gate I had leaned at for the view
And had just turned from when I first saw you
As you came up the hill. We met. But all
We did that day was mingle great and small
Footprints in summer dust as if we drew
The figure of our being less that two
But more than one as yet. Your parasol
Pointed the decimal off with one deep thrust.
And all the time we talked you seemed to see
