壊れた家（中世風物語） ―― サムエル・テイラー・コールリッジ

コールリッジの作品は髄分訳したつもりだったが、昨晩ふと気付いたのが中世風の雰囲気があるソネットである。比較的易しそうだったので早速訳した。ただ題の ”On a Ruined House in a Romantic Country” をどう訳すか？詩人は「壊れた家」を見て感慨にふける。ロマン派の詩人からすれば、「壊れた家」は経営不振で廃屋になった家ではない。盗賊に襲われた家であり、あわれな乙女と彼女の騎士が登場する。様にはならないが、仮題として「壊れた家（中世風物語）」としておいた。

On a Ruined House in a Romantic Country

And this reft house is that the which he built,
Lamented Jack! And here his malt he pil'd,
Cautious in vain! These rats that squeak so wild,
Squeak, not unconscious of their father's guilt.
Did ye not see her gleaming thro` the glade?
Belike, 'twas she, the maiden all forlorn.
What though she milk no cow with crumpled horn,
Yet aye she haunts the dale where erst she stray'd ;
And aye beside her stalks her amorous knight !
Still on his thighs their wonted brogues are worn,
And thro' those brogues, still tatter'd and betorn,
His hindward charms gleam an unearthly white;
As when thro' broken clouds at night's high noon
Peeps in fair fragments forth the full-orb'd harvest-moon !

壊れた家

盗みに入られたこの家を建てたのは彼
惜しまれるあの男！モルトはきちんと
積み上げてあるのに！横着なネズミが
親の罪も知らずにチュウーチュウー鳴く。
空き地の向こうに輝く彼女が見えるかい？
多分彼女だろう、見捨てられた乙女
乳を絞ろうにも角の曲がった牝牛はなく
以前に迷いこんだ谷間をうろついている。
彼女が歩くそばに恋する彼女の騎士が！
日ごろはきなれたズボンを着ている
ボロボロになったこのズボンからは
彼の隠れたすばらしい魅力が白く輝く。
まるで真夜中の千切れ雲の合間から
中秋の満月が美しい一部を見せるよう。

距離測定 ― ロバート・フロスト

なぜ Range-Finding距離測定という題がついたのか釈然としない。釈然としない場合はとんでもない誤訳の可能性がある。私が不得意とする動植物の生態系の問題がテーマになっているので気がかりである。

モウズイカという植物が背を高く伸ばして生長する矢先に蝶々にやられてしまい、秋を奪われるという話である。ロマン派の詩に出てくる蝶々と違ったイメージである。

詩の形式はお得意の五歩格のソネット形式。
韻の構造は
ABBAABBACCDEED
である。

The battle rent a cobweb diamond-strung
And cut a flower beside a ground bird's nest
Before it stained a single human breast.
The stricken flower bent double and so hung.
And still the bird revisited her young.
A butterfly its fall had dispossessed
A moment sought in air his flower of rest,
Then lightly stooped to it and fluttering clung.

On the bare upland pasture there had spread
O'ernight 'twixt mullein stalks a wheel of thread
And straining cables wet with silver dew.
A sudden passing bullet shook it dry.
The indwelling spider ran to greet the fly,
But finding nothing, sullenly withdrew.

距離測定

争いでひし形のクモの巣はちぎれ
地上にすむ鳥の巣のそばにある
花は人の胸を染める前に切断され
二重に曲がってうなだれる。
鳥はなおもヒナのところに戻る。
チョウは花の秋を、花が空中で
求めていた安息の瞬間をうばい
身をかがめ、ひらひらとまとわる。

一夜のうちに禿山の牧草地一面に
銀の露にぬれた一巻きの糸と
ピンと張りつめた綱が広がる。
いきなりの流れ弾でもそれは枯れる。
主のクモがチョウを向かえようと走るが
何もないので不機嫌に引き下がる。
