プロメテウス ―― アリス・メイネル

アリス・メイネルENはイギリスの女流詩人。女性参政権運動に熱心で、大英帝国の植民地支配にも懐疑的であったという。今日（9月22日）は彼女の誕生日である。彼女は幼年時代を陽光眩いイタリアに住んでいた。今日の詩も光の賛美である。

PROMETHEUS

IT was the south : mid-everything,

Mid-land, mid-summer, noon ;

And deep within a limpid spring

The mirrored sun of June.

Splendour in freshness ! Ah, who stole

This sun, this fire, from heaven?

He holds it shining in his soul,

Prometheus the forgiven.

今ある雪こそ永遠 ―― アーチボルト・マクリーシュ

今日のマクリーシュは冷凍保存技術を開発して新鮮な野菜や魚肉を庶民に提供したバーズアイ社の鮭の捕獲に抗議している。優美に跳躍する鮭が消え、跳躍せずに水に隠れた鮭が残る。バーズアイ社は標準の紅色の鮭を食い潰している、というものである。

食料の今と永遠をテーマにしたマクリーシュの詩は簡潔を意図し、繰り返しを省いている。

The Snowflake Which Is Now and Hence Forever

Will it last? he says.
Is it a masterpiece?
Will generation after generation
Turn with reverence to the page?

Birdseye scholar of the frozen fish,
What would he make of the sole, clean, clear
Leap of the salmon that has disappeared?

To be, yes!--whether they like it or not!
But not to last when leap and water are forgotten,
A plank of standard pinkness in the dish.
