リラの緑を絶えず

揺らしては優しく

警告してきたのに

春に咲く気のない

花に春は仕返しに

香水用と判決する

開花には時期が肝心。時期を失すると賞賛を浴びることなく、香水となる運命。婚期を逸した女性の詩だろうか。この作品は詩に造詣がある女性に送った手紙に書き添えられたものである。だが、受取人は皆目理解できなかったという逸話が残されている。今迄訳を試みたが失敗した。今回が初投稿である。

How lonesome the Wind must feel Nights —

When people have put out the Lights

And everything that has an Inn

Closes the shutter and goes in —

 

How pompous the Wind must feel Noons

Stepping to incorporeal Tunes

Correcting errors of the sky

And clarifying scenery —

 

How mighty the Wind must feel Morns

Encamping on a thousand dawns

Espousing each and spurning all

Then soaring to his Temple Tall —
