未だ見てはいない朝が来た――エミリー・ディキンソン

There is a morn by men unseen -

 

There is a morn by men unseen -

Whose maids opon remoter green

Keep their seraphic May -

And all day long, with dance and game,

And gambo! I may never name -

Employ their holiday.

 

Here to light measure, move the feet

Which walk no more the village street -

Nor by the wood are found -

Here are the birds that sought the sun

When last year's distaff idle hung

And summer's brows were bound.

 

Ne'er saw I such a wondrous scene -

Ne'er such a ring on such a green -

Nor so serene array -

As if the stars some summer night

Should swing their cups of Chrysolite -

And revel till the day -

People opon that mystic green -

乙女らは遥か遠い緑の上で

五月祭の天使の衣装を纏い――

私は呼び名を知らないが、

一日踊りと遊戯とガンボで――

お祭りの日を祝って過ごす。

 

軽い拍子に乗り足が動くが

村の通り道がやっとのこと――

あの森までも辿り着けない――

昨年のリボンが垂れ下がり

夏が不機嫌な顔をする頃に

光を求めた鳥も戻っている。

 

かかる素敵な光景を知らず――

かかる緑の上の輪も知らず――

かかる整然とした動きも――

まるである夏の夜に星々は

クリソライトの盃を揺らし――

夜明けまで酔いしれたよう――

 

汝の如く踊り――歌うため――

この神秘の緑に集う人よ――

私は願う。五月祭の朝に。

私は遥かなる――壮麗な鐘が――

この谷間の私への合図を待つ―― 

年により違う夜明けに！！

言わずとしれた五月一日のメイデイの祭りである。樹を切り倒し、先端に色とりどりのリボンを結び、メイポールとする。これを立て、乙女が白い装束を纏い、整然と踊り、リボンを編んでいくのがメイデイのアトラクションである。エミリーはお硬いプロテスタントが異教の祭りと否定したが、エミリーはお構いなしである。

今日も過去の詩の改定の作業である。輝かしい夏の季節が終わり、夜鷹や椋鳥が鳴かぬ時期には、私（エミリー）は、汝（アネモネ）に花を咲かせ、音学（葉擦れの音）を奏でさせようとする。私は同じく、寒い時期に墓場に咲く、好きな雛菊を避けてまでも、汝のもとへと急ぎ、汝の成長と開花を見届ける。寒い時期に夏をもたらすアネモネ賛美の詩である。

When Summer days are flown!

Thy music still, when Whippowil

And Oriole - are done!

 

For thee to bloom, I'll skip the tomb

And row my blossoms o'er!

今日はエミリーの義理の妹であるスーザンの２８回目の誕生日に、エミリーが送った詩である。エミリーとスーザンは同年、同月に生まれているが、スーザンは十日遅れて生まれているので辛うじて妹である。彼女はエミリーの兄のオースティンと結婚し、ディキンソン家の敷地内の家に住んだ。実の妹は通称ヴィニーであり、エミリーと同じ家に住み、生涯未婚であった女性である。

One Sister have I in our house,
