How many times these low feet staggered —

Only the soldered mouth can tell —

Try — can you stir the awful rivet —

Try — can you lift the hasps of steel!

 

Stroke the cool forehead — hot so often —

Lift — if you care — the listless hair —

Handle the adamantine fingers

Never a thimble — more — shall wear —

拒否されてもまた立ち上がる、エミリー工房の様子は読んだことがある。この詩はいつもの弱侠客ではなく、強弱格である。命令形なら分かるが、第三詩節では本来名詞の前にあるはずの形容詞が行の先頭に出て来る。この点に注意すれば翻訳すれば訳は可能であるが、第三詩節は第一詩節と第二詩節と上手く接合しているのか疑問である。意欲的に強弱格を採用したのに、形式的には整っている。

And God, that he called his,

Till, recently a rival Claim

Disturbed these amities.

The property, my garden,

Which having sown with care,

He claims the pretty acre,

But Justice is sublimer

この詩の落ちはショウにある。エミリーはノーベル賞受賞者のバーナード・ショウを知る由もない。ショウという人物を調べてみたら、これだと思う人物が出た。一九世紀アメリカで人気のあったショウと人物がそれだと思った。Henry Wheeler Shaw (1818 – 1885)が

残した警句の中、蜂の贔屓である彼女が気に入りそうなのはこれだと思った。

 

「莫大な財産を貯め込み、その後どっかりと座り込んだ百万長者をみると、一樽の蜂蜜に落ちた蠅を思い出す」。

 

こんな警句を出したショウに弁護してもらえば、エミリーも訴訟に勝てるだろう。
