エミリーは女子学生にも理科系教育を重視したマウント・ホリヨーク女学校に一時籍を置いたせいか、ルイジ・ガルヴァーニの実験を体験したのであろうか。あるいは退学してからの読書による知識であろうか、脳のないカエルの筋肉の痙攣に興味を持ったのであろうか。魂という神学的概念と筋肉の電気信号双方に興味を持っていたと私は思うのであるが。
