For every Bird a Nest —

Wherefore in timid quest

Some little Wren goes seeking round —

 

Wherefore when boughs are free —

Households in every tree —

Pilgrim be found?

 

Perhaps a home too high —

Ah Aristocracy!

The little Wren desires —

 

Perhaps of twig so fine —

Of twine e'en superfine,

Her pride aspires —

 

The Lark is not ashamed

To build upon the ground

Her modest house —

 

Yet who of all the throng

Dancing around the sun

Does so rejoice?

何方が高い所とは言え

太陽と踊り回り楽しい？

 

エミリー・ディキンソン

 

詩の構造は六詩節からなる。一詩節は三行からなり、韻の形式はAABである。

 

ミソサザイは小柄ながら歌唱力があり、利口な鳥として人気があるが、比較的低い場所に住んでいる。エミリーはそれを題材にして詩を書いた。太陽と踊り楽しいかな？

So spicy her Carnations nod —

So drunken, reel her Bees —

So silver steal a hundred flutes

That whoso sees this little flower

By faith may clear behold

The Bobolinks around the throne

And Dandelions gold.

ボボリンクと黄金色の

タンポポを見詰める。

パズルの答えはサフラン・クロッカスであろう。春を告げる花とされ、収穫量が少なく高価なることで知られている。
