田舎に通じておく必要 ―― ロバート・フロスト

フロストが見聞したニューイングランドの田園での出来事である。深夜を輝く夕暮れした火事の顛末。鳥は相変わらず元気であるし、自然は回復し始めた。

The Need of Being Versed in Country Things

The house had gone to bring again

To the midnight sky a sunset glow.
Now the chimney was all of the house that stood,
Like a pistil after the petals go.

The barn opposed across the way,
That would have joined the house in flame
Had it been the will of the wind, was left
To bear forsaken the place's name.

No more it opened with all one end
For teams that came by the stony road
To drum on the floor with scurrying hoofs
And brush the mow with the summer load.

The birds that came to it through the air
At broken windows flew out and in,
Their murmur more like the sigh we sigh
From too much dwelling on what has been.

Yet for them the lilac renewed its leaf,
And the aged elm, though touched with fire;
And the dry pump flung up an awkward arm;
And the fence post carried a strand of wire.

For them there was really nothing sad.
But though they rejoiced in the nest they kept,
One had to be versed in country things
Not to believe the phoebes wept.

田舎に通じておく必要

あの家は真夜中の空に
夕暮れ時の輝きを提供した。
今や煙突が残る家のすべて
花弁が散った後の雌しべ。

納屋は道を隔てて向かい側
家と一緒に炎に包まれるところ
風の意思であろうか、焼け残り
見捨てられ、地名を維持した。

その後の目的は同じではない
石だらけの道を走る馬は
急ぎ足で地面を鳴らし
干草を夏の積荷で触る。

空からやってくる鳥は
壊れた窓から出入りし
鳥のささやきは以前のことを
話しこんでつく僕らのため息のよう。

だがリラは鳥のために葉を回復し
火に触れた楡の老木もまた。
ポンプは無様な腕を動かし
柵にはつながったワイヤがある。

実際に鳥には何も悲しい事はない。
鳥はすみかの巣に恵まれているが
田舎のことも知っておくべき
フィビーが泣いたなど信じない。

最後の行の「フィビーが泣いた」とは何を意味するのか？フィビー phoebeは鳥の名前であるが、ギリシャ神話のヘーリアデスHeliadesの一人の名前でもある。フィビーは父の死を嘆き悲しんだ一人とされる。このことを言っているのであろう。

おそい遠出 ―― ロバート・フロスト

フロストの物悲しい秋の詩。偶数行で韻を踏み、バラッド形式である。フロストのいつもの職人芸。

Late Walk

When I go up through the mowing field,
The headless aftermath,
Smooth-laid like thatch with the heavy dew,
Half closes the garden path.

And when I come to the garden ground,
The whir of sober birds
Up from the tangle of withered weeds
Is sadder than any words

A tree beside the wall stands bare,
But a leaf that lingered brown,
Disturbed, I doubt not, by my thought,
Comes softly rattling down.

I end not far from my going forth
By picking the faded blue
Of the last remaining aster flower
To carry again to you.

雪の粉 ―― ロバート・フロスト

フロストがお悔やみに出かけた帰りに、喪服を着たカラスに雪を落とされて気分が少し晴れるというものである。雪を振りかけてもらい気分が楽になるというのは、日本人の習俗に通じるものがある。

二歩格の詩である。韻の構造は

献身 ―― ロバート・フロスト

フロストの五歩格の詩。脚韻はすべて女性韻(feminine rhyme：最後から2音節目が強勢)である。最初の一行は弱強格で始まり、次の行から強弱格である。すなわち弱強格で厳粛に語り始め、次に強弱格で打ち寄せる波に毅然とした海辺を表現している。内容に相応しい韻律と解釈した。

The heart can think of no devotion
Greater than being shore to the ocean—
Holding the curve of one position,
Counting an endless repetition.

除隊にあらず ―― ロバート・フロスト

今日のフロストの詩は軍人と妻の物語である。フロストは第一次、第二次とも兵士として世界大戦には参戦していない。今日の詩が書かれた時を示す資料を持ち合わせないが、第二次世界大戦中のアメリカ軍の兵士の物語と考えて間違いないだろう。

一見五体満足な夫が戦争から帰還して妻はこの上なく幸せなはずだが。

Not to Keep

They sent him back to her. The letter came

Saying... And she could have him. And before
She could be sure there was no hidden ill
Under the formal writing, he was in her sight,
Living. They gave him back to her alive
How else? They are not known to send the dead
And not disfigured visibly. His face?
His hands? She had to look, and ask,
"What was it, dear?" And she had given all
And still she had all they had they the lucky!
Wasn’t she glad now? Everything seemed won,
And all the rest for them permissible ease.
She had to ask, "What was it, dear?"

"Enough,"
Yet not enough. A bullet through and through,
High in the breast. Nothing but what good care
And medicine and rest, and you a week,
Can cure me of to go again." The same
Grim giving to do over for them both.
She dared no more than ask him with her eyes
How was it with him for a second trial.
And with his eyes he asked her not to ask.
They had given him back to her, but not to keep.

除隊にあらず

軍は彼を彼女に送り返した。手紙に
書いてあるのは…そして彼は彼女のもの。
公式の文書でかくれた病気がないことは
確信していたが、彼は彼女の目の前に生きて
いる。生きた彼を軍は戻したが、何か？
軍が戦死者と容貌を損なっていない兵を
送還するのは聞いたことがない。彼の顔？
彼の手は？彼女はどうしても見て聞いた
「何があったの？」彼女にはすべてを与えてもお釣りが！
彼女には「ツイてる二人」のすべてがある！
彼女は嬉しくなかったのか？何もかもがあり
その他は二人には我慢できるものだった。
彼女はやはり聞いた「何があったの？」

「別になにも」
「ないってわけじゃ。胸部の上を弾が
ピューッというわけさ。ただ手当てと
薬と休養、それに君と一週間
これで直るし、また出かけられるさ」
ニコリとせず繰り返される同じやり取り。
彼のもう一度の出征はどうなるのか
彼女はただ目でたずねるだけであった。
彼は目で聞いてくれるなといっていた。
軍は彼を彼女に戻したが、「除隊にあらず」。
