エミリーは夏と太陽の崇拝者ではあるが、この詩は彼女が好んで描く「極夜」の情景である。私はそう断定したいが、私の好みによる偏った誤解でないことを願う。「24時間以内にお届けします」というアメリカの宿題業者GradeSaver に採り上げられた詩であるから、アメリカの学生を悩ませた実績のあるパズルらしい。

 

エミリーは朝日と夕日を擬人法で同時に登場させる手法で「極夜」を表現してきたが、ここでは双子に変身させている。

エミリーは女子学生にも理科系教育を重視したマウント・ホリヨーク女学校に一時籍を置いたせいか、ルイジ・ガルヴァーニの実験を体験したのであろうか。あるいは退学してからの読書による知識であろうか、脳のないカエルの筋肉の痙攣に興味を持ったのであろうか。魂という神学的概念と筋肉の電気信号双方に興味を持っていたと私は思うのであるが。
