The only Ghost I ever saw

Was dressed in Mechlin — so —

He wore no sandal on his foot —

And stepped like flakes of snow —

 

His Gait — was soundless, like the Bird —

But rapid — like the Roe —

His fashions, quaint, Mosaic —

Or haply, Mistletoe —

 

His conversation — seldom —

His laughter, like the Breeze —

That dies away in Dimples

Among the pensive Trees —

 

Our interview — was transient —

Of me, himself was shy —

「紫の井戸に落す」、「戻すは永遠の命；死」から落ちたら抜け出せない袋状の花を考えた。落ちたら最後の肉食植物に詩中の白や紫の高貴な花がないので、毒性はあるが観賞用の花としてジギタリス（狐の手袋）を考えた。

Sod: 古語 seeth の三人称、単数、過去形ある。過去分詞という記述はなかったが、詩では過去形が、過去分詞として使われることがある。強引だが、「沸騰する」の過去分詞とした。芝という意味が最も普通であるが、一層何の意味やら分からない。

 

Down: 羽毛の意に解釈した。雲の喩え。

 

Whip of Diamond：流星と解釈した。

 

昨夜一晩考えたが、いつもの夕陽賛美の詩ではなく、夕焼け雲を描いたものと思えてきた。今日の所は、燦然たる夕陽が沈み、朱に染まった雲が悠然と移動する様子をきらびやかに描いた詩ということにしておこう。全くの間違いとは思えないが、幻想、妄想が混じってはいるだろう。久しぶりの超難詩である。

エミリーにしては単純なお話である。パンが二箇所登場するので、翻訳は不可能である。

 

この詩に登場する Dollie とは人形の意味と女性名 Dorothea の指小形の Dollie がある。当時としては珍しい目を閉じる人形を見て、Dollieが死んだと大騒ぎになったが、女の子の Dollie は生きていたというお話。この際癒やしで知られた Jesus を呼んだが、Jesus は俗語の間投詞としても使われる。日本語の「畜生」に相当する。Dollie と Jesus の二つのパンとエミリーの新しもの好きが出ている。ちなみに、気圧計、ガスランプ、アイスクリーム製造機が登場する。
