この断章はまさに断章であろう。コールリッジは韻を踏まない詩をいつも書いている。だが一行の音節数がこれほど不揃いな詩は始めてである。結論を想像することも無理である。いささか戸惑った。この詩のメモのファクシミリがあれば見てみたい。ただ書き留めただけか、途中で放り出したのか？ 断章六：円い月の輪郭のはっきりしていること！ -― サムエル・テイラー・コールリッジ Fragment 6: The Moon, how definite its orb! 1897年の二月にコールリッジがノートに記した詩とされる。この不思議な樹はバンヤンだそうである （The Collected Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Volume 16：Part 1）。バンヤンはすでに東洋から西洋に運び込まれ、コールリッジが見る機会はあったであろう。その樹の下で苦行僧が祈祷する光景は目にしていないはずである。これはロマン派一流の幻想の産物であろう。上述文献の論者はさらに論者は、作者はバンヤンの分かれた幹で多神教を喩えているとする。なるほど。 未発表の詩であるが、この段階での韻の構造は英雄韻である。 AABBCCDDDEE Fragment 4: As some vast Tropic tree, itself a wood As some vast Tropic tree, itself a wood, That crests its Head with clouds, beneath the flood Feeds its deep roots, and with the bulging flank Of its wide base controls the fronting bank,
